Hunger doesn’t go away just because School is out.  It is more important than ever to remember to BRING ONE:  Bring a non-perishable food item EACH TIME YOU COME TO TEMPLE to be donated to the Interfaith Food Pantry of the Oranges.  And maybe even make a few special trips now that our Schools are not in session!

Although many of us have different schedules in the summer, we still need to ensure a full contingent ofvolunteers at the Interfaith Food Pantry on the fourth Wednesday of every month.  If you can help over the summer, please contact  Janet Schwamm.  Kids (age 6 and up) are welcome to help as well!

Transportation is available for congregants who need a ride to services and temple events.  Contact Alice Forman at (973)736-3467 if you need a ride or if you can offer a ride to others.

Parasha Balak

Numbers  22:2-25:9

The forty-year journey through the wilderness is nearing its end. The Moabite King, Balak, feels threatened by the Israelites and sends a soothsayer named Balaam to curse them.  Balaam sets out on a donkey, but only the animal is able to see an angel sent by God to block the way.  Balaam beats the donkey who responds, “What have I done to you that you have beaten me…?”  Balaam is then able to see the angel who instructs Balaam to say only the words that God puts in his mouth.  Several times Balaam attempts to curse the Israelites and each time he blesses them instead.  His blessings are written in the Torah in poetic form.  One such blessing, “How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob, Your dwellings, O Israel” appears in the liturgy (Ma Tovu…).  The parasha ends with the Israelite men consorting with the Moabite women and worshipping the local diety, Baal-Peor.  God becomes enraged.  Pinchas, the grandson of Aaron, slays an Israelite man and a Moabite woman. The story of Pinchas continues in next week’s parasha.
