In late August, Hurricane Irene whipped across the East Coast of the United States and Canada. Following the storm, our crisis management team reached out to every URJ congregation in the affected area and found that fortunately, the impact of the storm was less extensive than originally predicted.
However, communities throughout Vermont were hard-hit by storm-related floods. In Woodstock and Brattleboro, where the flooding was particularly bad, our URJ-affiliated congregations were fortunate to avoid building damage and bodily harm. Still, their communities experienced devastating losses caused by the flooding, including damage to homes, businesses and farms; they now face thousands of dollars in repairs.
Those wishing to contribute to flood relief efforts in Woodstock, Brattleboro and the surrounding communities can donate to the URJ’s Hurricane Relief Fund.
