WUPJ STATEMENT ON PALESTINIAN UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

The World Union for Progressive Judaism, representing over 1.8 million Jews in 48 countries, views with concern the proposed Palestinian Unilateral Declaration of Independence if brought to the United Nations this week.

As Progressive Jews we support the concept of an independent Palestinian state living side by side in peace and harmony with the State of Israel. We see direct good-faith negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian entity as the best way to realize this goal.

For such a state to be welcomed in the community of nations it
must recognize the Jewish character of the State of Israel and express its desire to live in peace, harmony and cooperation with Israel.

The proposed vote raises concern that another round of violent action might ensue. The World Union for Progressive Judaism calls on both sides to take all possible measures to prevent such an occurrence and to work actively “to love peace and pursue it.”
