We had a great opening day last Sunday, welcoming all of our students, new and old. There is nothing like the excitement of the first day to get everybody rolling towards the new school year with renewed interest.
At our closing assembly, I shocked the students by asking them to take out their cell phones! Here is the reason why: my challenge to them is that by the end of the school year, as a school body we can perform at least 2013 mitzvot. In keeping with our theme Sync your iJew: Find the Jew in You, I am asking them to use technology to communicate their mitzvah to me. They need to email me, so I asked them all to put my email address into their phones. The Mitzvah Counter will appear in our newsletter, on the totems in the temple lobby, and on our website. The class that does the most mitzvoth will win a prize!
I was so excited when just a few hours later, I received my first email from Fourth Grader Ben Bratter’s Mom: “Ben just participated in the Food Pantry/Soup Kitchen at Epiphany church. He also voluntarily and without any prompting, just gave me the $5 he earned to donate to the Jersey Animal Coalition. And lastly, today he helped me organize, pack and distribute household goods, toys and backpacks that I collected for distribution in Newark.”
Way to go Ben! You set a fine example that I know many of our students will follow. Please email me today with your child’s mitzvah: firstname.lastname@example.org.
